Herr Gernot. The wagon-wheel effect is a stroboscopic illusion which tampers with one's grasp of the persistence of vision.

It suggests that, gazing through a wagon or stagecoach wheel, one is watching a film when they are actually watching the world turn from a satellite. It distorts your perceptions, makes you think progressing forward is actually going backwards, staying still, or slowing down and vice versa for the reverse motion.

It's an apposite metaphor for any of our current series of extended mishaps, like perhaps the War on Drugs, which is also the name of an atmospheric set of sonic explorers who have just released their debut album entitled Wagonwheel Blues using a compound portmanteau of the aforementioned wheel. Wagonwheel Blues daubs watercolor sketches of Americana from the Midwest prairie through the lonesome crowded west on to the beaches and rocky shores.

It too has its own wagon-wheel effects, as the words of its songs reciprocate, recycle, and reappear in various forms throughout the verses, reproportioning its themes "Go meet me on the highways and the one-way streets" It also distorts its own forward momentum, breaking off of its roots cathexis for dips into electronic green screen utopias and post-rock studio tweakings. Oddest of all may be the band's vantage point: metropolitan Philadelphia.

Though its Fairmount Park is a rare urban example of anachronistic greenery, Philly hardly seems the best city from which to wax theosophical on the pastoral.

Essentially a twosome comprised of Adam Granduciel and Kurt Vile, who split their time between a spare closet's worth of instruments, the War on Drugs makes music about a changing America and a changing earth, as well as changes in inner space.

The inclusion of both harmonica and political allegory on an album will guarantee them comparisons to Dylan. And though the War on Drugs don't fight this comparison they often invite it with the occasional psychedelic wanderin'-man claptrap lyricsthey do supersede the exhausting line of flaccid imitators in favor of a new chemical mixture of classic rock, post-rock, and possibly even a little bit of that brand of late '80s pop, where every rock tune had a keyboard or synth backup Springsteen, Peter Gabriel, Talk Talk, etc.

But what Neon Bible smothers you with in overtones, Wagonwheel Blues at least introjects via cryptic passages, anxious travelogues, and tales of interpersonal disconnection. As such, it's probably a truer tale of 21st century alienation than the Arcade Fire's didacticism.

Its path to get there is less grandiose and more intimate and more abstrusefull of nervous energy that screams for release at every turn. Part of this is achieved via the monotonal bass, sometimes levying itself a nomadic drone, a kind of room-tone temperament of lingering sound.

As a result, songs like the minute "Show Me the Coast" plead for climax. Instead, the album is wagon-wheeled.

Its major peak comes in its first track. Everything after is elegiac denouement, passive reflection, or swirling clouds of wonderment. The album's finale, "Barrel of Batteries", is broken and opaque, purposefully recorded muddy and frothing with faux grit like something off of Vile's Ariel-Pink styled solo LP.

It's an incidental afterthought of a song, but fitting to the War on Drugs' interpretive cartography. Fittingly then, Wagonwheel Blues opens with a song of defeat and surrender. It's the album's strongest song, one whose poetic flourishes could be widely applied to all levels of disappointment, like an old hymnal asking you to humble yourself before God. A fortress which, Granduciel tells us later, is used to chase squirrels and for "making sure they know this is your kingdom".

Granduciel, credited with vocals, at times seems the unlikely three-way gene-spliced spawn of Dylan, Petty, and Animal Collective's Avey Tare. Appropriately then, Wagonwheel Blues 's anthems are rugged and blue-collar, but observed through a technologic modern mindset.

Every strummed note on the album is juxtaposed by a meditative electronic sequence somewhere, like the shimmering chords of "There Is No Urgency" or the processed piano of "Reverse the Charges", which sounds remote and refined, not unlike the similarly distant strands of Faust's "Das Meer".

Wagonwheel Blues 's strongest suit of all may be that it is refreshingly uncynical. Just what part of Philly do these boys come from, anyway?Secretly Canadian introduces a solid new Americana band that-- althogh steeped in the usual influences Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, the Band -- never burdens you with the stigma of roots music or reached-for authenticity.

The War on Drugs make excellent road-trip music. As its title implies, the Philly quintet's debut, Wagonwheel Bluesis Americana reimagined as blacktop and yellow lines, rubber tires, and overpriced gasoline. The album urges you along the interstate, but never burdens you with the stigma of roots music or reached-for authenticity. The Felice Brothers drove the same roads on their recent self-titled album, but where those upstate New Yorkers treated their Band dynamic as a link to a past more imagined than real, the War on Drugs filter these elements through the noise of early Yo La Tengo and Sonic Youth.

Their songs are tangles of guitar, distorted harmonica, and droning organ, all wrapped so tightly that they become indistinguishable. Following a free digital EP, Barrel of Batterieswhere two of these songs originate, Wagonwheel Blues sounds modern, outsize, and urban. On opener "Arms Like Boulders", guitars dart like tracers as Granduciel sings about He may be referring either to the general buzz of bad omens or to the song itself, which adds a drum loop to their established formula, speeds things up, makes it infectious, then implodes in an ominous guitar finale.

Back to back, these two tracks make an enormous first impression. Immediately following that pair of openers is the instrumental "Coast Reprise ", despite the fact that the song it's nominally reprising doesn't come until much later in the album. It seems like such an odd choice in sequencing-- chasing two defining tracks with an atmospheric aside-- but their madness becomes more methodical with repeated listens.

In fact, the War on Drugs have divided their debut into three sections separated by two instrumentals. It's a curious tactic: "Coast Reprise " and "Reverse the Charges" build open-road ambience with cascading guitars and synths, and although they can be repetitive and overlong, these buffer tracks generate an immersive lurch and lull, which makes Wagonwheel Blues distinctively roadworthy. Beyond that, they reveal the band to be more than simply a backdrop for Granduciel's familiar singing and songwriting.

Wagonwheel Blues is largely a collaboration between multi-instrumentalists Granduciel and Kurt Vile whose own album, Constant Hitmaker, elaborates on this solid approachand they emphasize sound and song equally, showing a wide musical range despite the limited elements. Slurred guitar notes hoist "There Is No Urgency" aloft, with only faint drums as ballast.

And "Show Me the Coast" is a minute epic that devolves into what might best be described as the E Street Band doing shoegazer. On Wagonwheel Bluesthe War on Drugs' approach comes across as not only natural, but imminently worthwhile, as if these revered sources needed to be roughed up a bit to sound new. So the Arcade Fire-sale organ on "A Needle in Your Eye 16" one of the best approximations of that band's cathedral-size sound may initially seem immodest against Granduciel's classic-rock vocals and the relentless snare rhythm, but the War on Drugs aren't just another indie band with arena ambitions.

Instead, they craft a big sound for their big ideas, so that Wagonwheel Blues fills the space between horizons. Skip to content Search query All Results. Pitchfork is the most trusted voice in music. Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Open share drawer. The first full-length by the War on Drugs is at once an album of its time -- indie rock as collection and collage of classic rock sonic signifiers that rank former tourmates Neil Young and Sonic Youth as equal inspirations -- and something that stretches beyond those expectations.

That may sound like damning with faint praise, but given indie's crisis of confidence in itself in the 21st century, finding all sorts of "real" rock to hold on to as a rear-guard action against pop's all-devouring reworking of world-wide sounds, hearing a band that doesn't sound beholden to create some sort of huge statement with their album is rather refreshing. Adam Granduciel's role as frontman is the kind of slightly strangled vocal signifier that could make one group of listeners think of Bob Dylan or Ian Hunter, and another of Half Japanese, while just as similarly the full band lineup seems to want to constantly move easily back and forth between an older set of sounds and a slightly newer one, with a definite bias towards the kind of lush guitar atmospherics that found a congenial home in the U.

Though sometimes the balance is fully skewed, as with the post-shoegaze chime and shimmer of the instrumental "Coast Reprise. In all, an unexpected delight. Listen to over 40 million songs with an unlimited streaming plan.
